What is Mindfulness & Meditation?
Mindfulness is a state of focused attention on the present moment. It is being fully present with where you are and what you are doing in this moment. Mindfulness is an awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions or experiences from moment to moment.
Meditation is a period of time, like 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc., in which one practices mindfulness, focusing on the present moment and whatever is happening in that moment, without judgment. It can be practiced sitting down, lying down or walking.
- Meditation is NOT a way to stop the mind from thinking.
- Meditation is a “practice”. Like any other skill, it is learned, practiced and strengthened. Much like our muscles that we strengthen through exercise, we do the same for our brain through meditation. It is exercise for the brain!
